Major Australian supermarket Coles Group Ltd. is implementing limits on egg purchases due to fears of shortages caused by the spread of the avian influenza virus. The restrictions apply to customers in all states except Western Australia, with each person limited to buying two egg cartons per day. The move follows the detection of the highly pathogenic H7N3 strain of avian influenza at a fifth farm in Victoria, resulting in substantial loss of chickens and eggs. Quarantine zones have been established to prevent the virus from spreading further, and authorities assure that Australian eggs are safe for consumption with no contaminated eggs entering the supply chain.
