In the early hours of June 11th, a devastating fire broke out in the pet area of Bangkok's popular Chatuchak market, resulting in nearly a hundred shops being destroyed and over 5000 animals of various species losing their lives. Following the fire, the Bangkok city government discovered that out of 44 animal-selling shops inspected, only 19 had licenses, indicating that more than half were operating without proper permits. The market, known for being one of Southeast Asia's largest outdoor markets and a famous tourist attraction in Bangkok, has now faced calls for closure from various groups due to concerns of inhumane and unhygienic conditions.
