Bank of England Advances Digital Currency Amid Bank Concerns

Reported about 1 month ago

The Bank of England is moving forward with plans for a digital currency accessible to the public, as Governor Andrew Bailey fears commercial banks may fall behind tech firms in providing safe and private payment services. Despite his preference against a central bank digital currency (CBDC), Bailey acknowledges its necessity if commercial banks do not foster innovation. A decision on pursuing a state-backed digital pound will not be made before 2025.
