Chinese media recently exposed unscrupulous businesses selling cheap apple snails as land snails, not only mixing them into processed sauces at factories but also infiltrating spicy hotpot and grilled skewer restaurants. Additionally, semi-cooked dishes, snacks, and snail noodles sold on e-commerce platforms may also pose hidden risks. Experts warn that apple snail meat contains heavy metals and organic pollutants, advising against consumption. Apple snails are considered invasive species and agricultural pests in many countries and are now being fraudulently sold as land snails in China, creating a new food safety risk.
