In an exclusive report on June 27, 2024, a person named Chan received a fake text message from a scam group pretending to be 'Taiwan Water Corporation' demanding immediate payment of overdue water bill of NT$395 to avoid water supply termination. The text included a suspicious link that led to a phishing webpage, resulting in the person losing NT$60,000 due to credit card information theft. Similar scams were also reported using the name of Taiwan Power Company. Both water and power companies have emphasized that their official text messages will not contain any short URLs, and people should only trust messages from the government's dedicated '111' shortcode. The Criminal Investigation Bureau warned the public to verify any overdue payment notifications by contacting the companies directly and to be cautious of suspicious text messages, advising to report any scams to the fraud prevention hotline and seek assistance from the police if scammed.
