Beware of Scams! Fake Utility Fee Collection Messages Result in Loss of 60,000 Taiwan Dollars with Only 3-Digit Code Verification

Reported 8 months ago

Scammers in Taiwan have been sending fake water and electricity bill collection messages with phishing links to deceive people into clicking and submitting personal information like credit card numbers. To combat this, Taiwan's Water Corporation and Electricity Company, in collaboration with the government, have initiated the '111 Short Code SMS' policy, where official messages will be sent from the central number '111' to urge recipients to verify before responding to prevent falling victim to fraud. Recently, a man surnamed Zhan lost 60,000 Taiwan Dollars due to entering his credit card information in a fraudulent water bill payment link. Authorities are cautioning the public to be vigilant as the scam tactics evolve.
