Utilizing technology for law enforcement in Taichung City, Chang Ting-hsuan revealed on June 13, 2024, the discovery of over 47,000 cases of tax evasion and vehicle violations. To track down tax evasion and violation vehicles, the Taichung City Government Local Tax Bureau installed license plate recognition systems at major intersections, using AI technology for law enforcement. Each year, over 40,000 tax evasion vehicles are detected, with the recovered back taxes reaching millions and fines amounting to billions. Taichung is home to about 1.13 million vehicles, the highest in the country. Since 2006, the bureau has set up license plate recognition systems to enhance tax collection efficiency. Last year alone, through technological enforcement, over 47,000 tax evasion and violation cases were identified, resulting in the collection of over 37 million in back taxes and fines exceeding 110 million. The bureau reminds those who have not paid their vehicle license taxes to do so promptly to avoid penalties. If caught after the deadline, a penalty of 0.3 times the owed tax will be imposed. Additionally, vehicles that have been deregistered, paid off, or deactivated and caught using public roads will face fines of 0.6 times for the first offense and 1.2 times for subsequent offenses within the same year.
