Bhutan lacks professionally trained actors, prompting director Bawo Kuenga Wangchuk and producer wife Rai Funyuen to cast local singers and amateurs, even for roles like an American character in 'Bhutan No Guns' and a local Lama in the film. Despite the temptation of working with Hollywood stars, Bawo heeded advice from director Ang Lee to maintain purity by choosing small productions and amateur actors. The film, inspired by real events, depicts the effects of democratization in the country. Shot in Taiwan and Bhutan over 35 days, the production faced challenges due to the pandemic. Foreign crew had to isolate, with daily rapid testing causing interruptions.
