A recent bizarre smuggling incident in mainland China involved a woman being caught at the Shenzhen Liantang Customs with live land turtles hidden on the sides of her unusually thick thighs, concealed under her sweatpants. The turtles were discovered during a body search when three hard objects were felt on her thighs, wrapped in tape. The woman was found to be smuggling Hermann's tortoises, a species listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. This is not the only strange smuggling case; previous incidents included a woman attempting to smuggle five live snakes in her bra and a man found with two Asian clawed otters and one ground squirrel hidden in his underwear.
