According to China Times News, on June 21, 2024, at around 4 pm, Taroko Express Train 229 encountered falling rocks while passing through the Qingshui Tunnel in Hualien, causing the second car of the train to derail. The train is currently halted at the scene, with at least 7 people injured, including the driver. As a result, 500 passengers are stranded inside the tunnel. Taiwan Railway plans to assist passengers by transferring them to Chongde and Xincheng stations using Train 4033. In response to the incident, Taiwan Railway has set up a level-one response team at its headquarters, Eastern Region response team, and on-site command post. Additionally, due to another rockfall incident affecting a train in the Heren section, emergency vehicles have gathered, and National Freeway 9 Heren Control Station is temporarily closed southbound. Currently, stranded passengers are evacuating on foot through the tunnel with mud, while related authorities are deploying full-fledged rescue efforts.
