Calamitous Pricing in Jiufen Taxis, Ignoring Government-Mandated Fair Rates! Driver Claims 'Additional Passenger Uses More Fuel' and Charges Extra 50 Taiwan Dollars

Reported about 1 year ago

Reported by SET News on July 5, 2024, in the morning at 12:20, in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, the popular tourist destination of Jiufen is known for its scenic views and delicious food. However, due to inconvenient transportation in Jiufen, many taxis are available to transport visitors up and down the mountainside. Recently, a family of six tourists from Taoyuan to Jiufen faced exorbitant fees when a taxi driver charged an extra 50 Taiwan Dollars per person, justifying it by claiming additional passengers used more fuel, despite the government's fixed rate of 220 Taiwan Dollars. The New Taipei City Transportation Department responded that if taxi drivers in the area continue to overcharge, passengers can request receipts or video evidence for reporting, with fines ranging from 9,000 to 90,000 Taiwan Dollars according to the Highway Act.
