The Department of Statistics, Ministry of Health and Welfare, released the results of the leading causes of death among Taiwanese in 2023, showing a decrease of 2,863 deaths from the previous year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cancer, heart disease, and pneumonia remain the top three main causes, with cancer ranking first for 42 consecutive years. COVID-19 has dropped from third to sixth place. The total number of deaths in 2023 was 205,550, a decrease of 1.4% compared to the previous year, with cancer remaining the top cause of death. Further comparisons with 2022 revealed fluctuations in rankings among different causes of death.
