Kristin Johnson, a Democratic commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, is a leading candidate to become the new chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC), according to sources familiar with the matter. The Biden administration is considering Johnson for the role following the announcement by current FDIC head Martin Gruenberg of his intention to step down. Johnson, who was unanimously confirmed as a commissioner at the CFTC in March 2022, could potentially play a crucial role in overseeing the banking system and implementing key policies under the Biden administration, such as proposed capital requirements for Wall Street banks. If nominated and confirmed, Johnson would need Senate approval to become the new FDIC chair.
