Chen Shui-bian's Case of Buying Officials and Money Laundering Exceeds Statute of Limitations and Acquitted, Taipei Prosecutors Appeal Based on 2 Reasons

Reported about 1 year ago

Former President Chen Shui-bian was acquitted by the Taipei District Court due to exceeding the statute of limitations in the case involving receiving a bribe of 10 million NT dollars through his wife Wu Shu-jen from former Taipei 101 Chairman Chen Min-hsun and laundering the money through Wu's brother Wu Ching-mao. Taipei Prosecutors appealed the decision citing miscalculations and procedural flaws. The case began in 2004 and the court stopped the trial in 2015 due to Chen's health. The court determined that the offense fell under the old Money Laundering Prevention Act with a maximum 5-year sentence, having a statute of limitations of 10 years which had expired during the trial period of over 16 years, leading to the acquittal.
