Chimney Island... Residents in Guanyin District Angered by Intensive Industrial Pollution Threat

Reported about 1 year ago

CTWANT Weekly, reported by Lu Xiaochan, China Times, June 10, 2024, 6:32 PM: The Guanyin District of Taoyuan is facing severe air and water pollution due to the concentration of factories in the industrial area, as well as illicit discharge of wastewater by some businesses. Known as the 'Chimney Island,' the area is now under pressure from air pollution, prompting local residents to protest to the central and Taoyuan city governments. Over the past few decades, various environmental pollution incidents have plagued the Guanyin District, including the cadmium-contaminated rice incident in 1983 and recent mass fish deaths in the Fulin Creek due to illegal wastewater dumping. The local community is demanding the cessation of factory construction and development in the area to prevent further health hazards and pollution.
