China's Taiwan Affairs Office, together with the 'Two High Courts and Three Departments,' released opinions on punishing 'stubborn Taiwan independence elements who split the country and incite crimes of splitting the country' on June 21. The 22 measures prompted concerns, but Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that China's laws have no jurisdiction over the Taiwanese people and cannot sanction or prosecute them. The Ministry reiterated President Lai Ching-te's statement that 'democracy is not a crime; authoritarianism is evil' and called for peaceful cross-strait dialogues, emphasizing mutual prosperity and the responsibility to safeguard peace. The international community has strongly condemned China's recent actions aimed at restricting Taiwan's democracy and increasing tensions in the region.
