According to an article by Xie Jinsheng, on June 23, 2024, China announced penalties for Taiwan independence supporters, including the possibility of the death penalty for those involved in splittism. During a visit to Tainan, People First Party Chairman Ko Wen-je criticized the move, stating that such actions by the Communist Party only serve to distance Taiwan even further, bringing it closer to the U.S. Ko also responded to criticisms of his party's cooperation with the CCP, highlighting the labeling tactics used by both the CCP and the DPP. Ko emphasized that such actions only push Taiwan further away and closer to the U.S.
