On June 22, 2024, the Supreme People's Court of China and other five departments jointly issued the 'Opinions on Legally Punishing Stubborn 'Taiwanese Independence' Elements for Splitting the Country and Inciting Separatist Crimes,' specifying that related crimes can be tried in absentia, with severe cases of splitting the country subject to life imprisonment or more than 10 years of fixed-term imprisonment, and those with particularly serious consequences can be sentenced to death. DPP legislator Shen Boyang warned that under a combined impact, this regulation will have a greater impact than imagined, emphasizing that Taiwan is facing 'a combination of punches, a coup.' Shen Boyang highlighted possible challenges Taiwan may face from the recent developments and expressed determination to protect Taiwan.
