Chinese Authorities Detain Fishing Boats from Penghu; Executive Yuan Reminds Fishermen to be Vigilant and Not Violate 'Off-season Fishing Restraint System'

Reported 12 months ago

On July 3, 2024, Executive Yuan spokesperson Chen Shih-kai provided information regarding Taiwanese fishing boats from Penghu being detained by Chinese authorities for crossing into Chinese waters during the off-season fishing period. Chen reiterated the importance of fishermen being aware of and not violating Chinese regulations related to off-season fishing, while also urging Chinese authorities to release the detained Taiwanese crew promptly to ensure their safety. The incident occurred in Chinese waters where Chinese law enforcement intercepted the Taiwanese fishing boats, causing eight Chinese coast guard vessels to surround and seize them at a port in Kinmen. The Taiwanese coast guard provided assistance to ensure the safety of the Taiwanese boats and fishermen, refraining from escalating conflicts. Additionally, Taiwan's Fisheries Agency had issued warnings in May regarding Chinese regulations on off-season fishing, reminding Taiwanese fishermen not to risk violating regulations and calling on Chinese authorities to handle the situation without resorting to unnecessary measures that could unsettle the fishermen.
