On June 9th, a 60-year-old Chinese man identified as Mr. Ruan drove a speedboat into Taiwan's New Taipei City's Tamsui River, claiming that he was restricted from leaving China due to expressing critical views about his country, hence risking illegal entry to Taiwan to 'seek freedom.' However, as he was revealed to have a naval background and served as a boat captain, concerns about national security arose, leading prosecutors to question his true motives. The incident raised questions about surveillance lapses and the decision-making process at the coastguard station, with authorities emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to ensure national security. Ruan is currently detained and under investigation in Taiwan.
