According to Reuters on July 6, 2024, a spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard reported that China has anchored its largest coast guard vessel in the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea. Terierra claimed that the vessel, dubbed the 'Monster Ship,' entered the EEZ about 200 miles off the Philippines' coast, with the intention to intimidate Manila. Despite recent conflicts, the Philippines has rejected U.S. assistance in their South China Sea operations. The two countries agreed on rebuilding trust and managing maritime conflicts following high-level talks earlier. China's extensive island-building and military facilities in the South China Sea have raised concerns among the U.S. and regional countries.
