On July 7, 2024, a Chinese oceanic research vessel named 'Jia Geng Hao' entered Taiwan's eastern waters, coming as close as 20 nautical miles to Yilan's Wushibi. The vessel, belonging to Xiamen University, was conducting operations along the Hualien-Yilan coast and briefly entered Taiwan's 24-nautical-mile contiguous zone. The Taiwan Coast Guard dispatched the CG-133 Taitung vessel to monitor and broadcast warnings, urging the vessel to change its course eastward. Due to recent incidents involving Chinese coast guard vessels harassing Taiwanese fishing boats, the presence of this research vessel raised suspicions among the public.
