On June 17, 2024, Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan expressed her willingness to act as a proponent of peace across the Taiwan Strait, following her recent attendance at a cross-strait forum where she felt goodwill from the mainland. Chang, the only incumbent county chief to attend, emphasized the importance of fostering beneficial exchanges between both sides, especially in regard to promoting agricultural products like grouper, pomelos, mangoes, and sugar apples, with hopes to reinvigorate cross-strait economic and trade relations. She highlighted the concerns of Taiwanese businesspeople regarding cross-strait tensions and emphasized the mutual desire for peace and mutual respect to prevail. The director of the National Development and China Studies Institute at the University of Culture further discussed the potential for enhancing cultural exchanges and collaboration in soft power initiatives between Taiwan and mainland China. Overall, the forum aimed to promote unity and face international challenges collectively to ensure the well-being of residents on both sides of the Strait.
