Envigo RMS, a company that bred beagles for research, pleaded guilty to neglecting thousands of dogs at its breeding facility in Virginia and was ordered to pay a record $35 million fine. The plea deal prohibits the company from breeding or selling dogs in the future. Prosecutors revealed that the company neglected basic care for the animals, leading to injuries, deaths, and environmental violations. Inotiv, the parent company, expressed contrition and vowed to uphold higher standards of animal welfare moving forward.
