Container Shipping Costs from Asia to the US Increase Due to Lunar New Year Demand

Reported about 20 hours ago

As 2025 begins, container shipping rates from Asia to the US have surged, primarily driven by pre-Lunar New Year demand. The Freightos Baltic Index reported a 23% increase in Asia-U.S. West Coast rates, rising to $5,929 per forty-foot unit, while East Coast rates climbed 13% to $6,934. As factories in Asia prepare to close for the Lunar New Year celebration, delays and congestion at ports due to increased demand and labor issues could further pressure shipping costs in the coming weeks.
