President Lai Ching-te has frequently mentioned the non-affiliation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait since taking office, with Liang Wen-chieh, Deputy Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council, even stating that the two sides are 'two countries.' Former President Ma Ying-jeou emphasized that cross-strait relations are definitely not inter-country relations, warning against the DPP disregarding the ROC Constitution and Taiwan's safety. Ma praised Mainland Affairs Council Chair Qiu Chuizheng's recent statement affirming that cross-strait relations are just that, marking a positive start, but insisted that more needs to be done to clarify that cross-strait relations are not inter-country relations.
