Dalai Lama Arrives in New York for Knee Treatment, Welcomed by Thousands of Followers

Reported 8 months ago

On June 23, the spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, arrived in New York from India to receive treatment for his knee. Thousands of supporters warmly welcomed him as he was escorted by a large group of followers upon his arrival. The Tibetan exile government reported that the lead doctor in the U.S. estimated that the Dalai Lama would be able to walk normally within 3 weeks after the knee treatment. Apart from medical treatment, there were no other scheduled events during this visit. Supporters in traditional Tibetan attire danced and sang outside the hotel to greet the Dalai Lama. Prior to his trip to the U.S., the Dalai Lama met with a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation in Dharamshala, and the U.S. Congress recently passed a bill encouraging dialogue between Beijing and Tibetan leaders. China strongly objected to this and urged the U.S. to recognize the separatist nature of the Dalai Lama's group, asking the U.S. not to engage with them. The Dalai Lama, who is nearing 89 years old, has reduced his international travel significantly. He mentioned that he will decide on his successor at the age of 90, causing concerns among Tibetans that Beijing might appoint his successor. The Dalai Lama emphasised the importance of equality among all human beings regardless of religion or tradition during his recent remarks.
