The overcrowded venue with an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 attendees led to a chaotic rush towards the stage to touch the speaker, causing the fatal stampede. The scene of numerous bodies being carried away in ambulances and the government's announcement of compensation for the victims' families reflects one of India's deadliest stampede incidents in history.
