Amid the ongoing global pandemic, Pakistan is facing a deadly outbreak of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), resulting in two fatalities in Rawalpindi. The victims, a butcher named Imran from Hazro and a woman named Khiran from Jund, passed away in May. As a precautionary measure, Punjab's Department of Livestock and Dairy Development has declared emergencies in Attock and other areas, conducting spraying and cleaning operations. The CCHF virus is transmitted through tick bites and can cause symptoms like joint pain, headaches, vomiting, and bleeding from the eyes, with a mortality rate of around 30% and potentially fatal within 2 weeks of onset. Last year, France detected the virus on ticks but had no reported human cases. People are advised to avoid carrying children to markets, wear light-colored clothing, refrain from touching animals, and apply insect repellent when buying sacrificial animals.
