As the Dragon Boat Festival long weekend comes to an end, popular tourist spots in eastern Taiwan, including Taitung, have suffered a significant decline in tourism due to ongoing earthquakes, with Taitung City looking deserted. A former Taitung county councilor posted photos of the empty streets, attributing the drop in visitors to fears following the recent natural disasters and transportation issues. The impact of the earthquakes is also evident in Hualien's tourism sector, with traffic volume on the Suhua Highway significantly lower than last year. In Yilan, tourist numbers and hotel occupancy rates for the holiday were halved, with attractions like Qingshui Geo-thermal Park seeing a noticeable decrease in visitors. Local businesses are urging the government to provide tourism subsidies to help revive the industry and address transportation challenges.
