A riot broke out at Kaohsiung Women's Prison as female inmates expressed dissatisfaction over the secretive transfer process from Taipei Women's Detention Center, accusing male prison guards at Kaohsiung Women's Prison of using pepper spray and forcibly restraining them, with some incidents leading to exposed clothing. The Ministry of Justice's Correctional Agency in response stated that all procedures were conducted according to the Prison Act, with female guards overseeing the facility, and female officers present during any necessary restraint procedures. The incident, dubbed a rare occurrence in the prison's history, was triggered by the transfer of over 30 short-term female inmates from Taipei to Kaohsiung, causing delays in family visits and supply deliveries. The Corrections System has been criticized for its handling of the situation, with complaints from families and inmates alike regarding the lack of proper treatment and coordination during the relocation.
