Downplaying Shanghai Mayor Hinders Cross-Strait Exchanges

Reported 7 months ago

As the Taipei City Government invited Mayor Gong Zheng of Shanghai to attend a dual-city forum, the Taiwan Affairs Office downplayed his level, suggesting the move belittled the mayor and the original purpose of the forum between Taipei and Shanghai, misconstruing the nature of the event. The Taiwan Affairs Office's comments on Mayor Gong being second in command and the imbalance with Taipei's mayor contradicts the significance of Shanghai in terms of population, area, and GDP. If Mayor Gong attends, it could be a breakthrough in cross-strait relations, especially given the current tensions between the two sides under the Democratic Progressive Party's rule.
