In ancient China, due to the underdeveloped medical knowledge, many young girls were forced into marriage, not only to continue the family line but also for the parents to receive compensation. Most ancient Chinese girls would marry around the age of thirteen or fourteen, such as Tang Dynasty's Li Shimin's eldest granddaughter who married him at the age of 13. This tradition was a result of feudal discrimination against women and the need for a larger population for warfare and productivity. Laws were even established to enforce early marriage, threatening imprisonment for families who did not comply. These practices reflect a dark aspect of history that is unthinkable by modern standards.
