Edison, the Italian gas and electric utility, plans to replace some of its pipeline gas contracts with liquefied natural gas (LNG) to enhance flexibility in demand management. The company has signed a 15-year deal with Shell for 0.7 million tonnes of U.S. LNG annually starting in 2028, aiming to adapt to uncertain consumption trends in Italy and Europe. CEO Nicola Monti indicated that as some existing pipeline contracts expire, they would likely reduce volumes and scale up LNG supplies to cater to fluctuating market demands.
