An elderly woman in her 70s, identified as Ms. Dai, was caught taking an $8 orange from a fruit stand in Taoyuan while feeling unwell and hungry. Despite returning the stolen orange, she was charged with theft but ultimately sentenced to a fine of NT$1000, which could be converted to community service, as well as attending a judicial education course. The court considered her circumstances including being a first-time offender, her health condition, and her age in issuing the lenient sentence.
