Over the past decade and a half, more than 20,000 shipping containers have been lost at sea, leading to environmental consequences including pollution of shorelines and harm to marine life. These lost containers, which are often filled with various goods like electronics and hazardous materials, can disrupt ecosystems when they sink, either remaining intact or bursting open. Cleanup efforts are complicated by the fact that many containers never get recovered, and while shipping industry reports suggest about 1,500 containers are lost each year, some experts believe the real number is significantly higher due to underreporting. Recent amendments by the United Nations aim to increase transparency around container losses, but enforcement remains uncertain.
