A study commissioned by the European Union and conducted by Thales Alenia Space revealed that moving data centers to space is a viable solution to mitigate electricity demands, with data centers in space benefitting from unlimited solar energy supply. The 16-month, €2 million 'ASCEND' project demonstrated that space-based data centers are technically, economically, and environmentally feasible, aiming to reduce energy demands and tap into solar power. The goal is to deploy 13 space data center buildings with a combined 10 MW capacity by 2036, with a long-term aim to deploy 1,300 buildings with a 1 GW capacity by 2050. Additionally, the research highlights the need for new launch facilities to significantly reduce carbon emissions, with plans to establish an eco-friendly launch site by 2035 for the project's feasibility.
