EU Far Right Makes Major Gains and Overwhelms, French President Macron Calls Early Election

Reported 11 months ago

The European Parliament elections, the second largest globally after India, concluded with moderate parties maintaining the largest group in the European Parliament. However, far-right parties showed significant strength in countries like France, Germany, Netherlands, and Austria, indicating a preferred anti-immigrant, nationalist direction by EU voters with the French and German leaders facing serious defeats. President Macron of France responded by announcing an early election, bringing more uncertainty to European politics before the Paris Olympics. Despite the moderate-right European People's Party remaining the largest party in the Parliament, ruling parties in France and Germany were overwhelmed by the far right, with President Macron dissolving the parliament for early elections. The far-right National Rally in France, led by Le Pen and Bardella, won 31.4% of the vote, doubling Macron's camp at 14.6%. Macron's unexpected move poses a high-risk political gamble and increases uncertainty for Europe's future political direction, especially with the looming Paris Olympics less than two months away.
