EU antitrust regulators charged Meta Platforms (META) for breaching EU tech rules by introducing a pay or consent advertising model in Europe, offering users a choice between a free service with ads or a paid ad-free service. The European Commission found that the binary choice violates the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by forcing users to consent to the combination of personal data or receive a less personalized version of Meta's social networks. Meta could face a fine of up to 10% of its global annual turnover if found guilty, with the investigation expected to conclude by March next year.
