The 39th EU-China Dialogue on Human Rights was held in Chongqing, China on June 16, with an EU delegation granted a rare visit to Tibet from the 13th to the 17th. Rigzin Genkhang, Representative of the Tibetan Central Administration in Western Europe, noted the visit's strong message to China regarding ongoing human rights violations in Tibet. The EU expressed deep concern over China's human rights situation, particularly in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, and called for the release of individuals like Swedish citizen Gui Minhai and human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng. However, Chinese officials criticized the EU for 'megaphone diplomacy' and rejected claims of human rights violations in the EU's annual report.
