EU regulators to charge Meta over 'pay or consent' model, FT reports

Reported 12 months ago

The European Union is set to charge Meta, the parent company of Facebook, for violating the EU's digital rules by implementing a 'pay or consent' model. According to the Financial Times, EU regulators are concerned that Meta's subscription service, which allows users to choose between consenting to be tracked for a free service or paying to protect their data, may not provide a genuine choice and could force users to agree to their personal data being tracked for advertising purposes. This action follows recent charges against Apple for breaching EU tech rules under the Digital Markets Act, which could lead to significant fines for the tech giant.
