Experts Criticize Ineffectiveness of Taiwan Agricultural Development Corporation, New Chair Rebuts

Reported 12 months ago

In order to mitigate the impact of trade liberalization on the country's agriculture and seize export opportunities, the Ministry of Agriculture established the Taiwan Agricultural Development Corporation in 2016 with the core missions including market risk diversification, technology export, and overseas investment. Experts claim that these missions have not been effectively carried out. The new Chairperson, Tang Shuhua, appointed from the Ministry of Agriculture, denied the allegations of inefficacy. The company has faced consecutive losses and was criticized for not meeting the expectations of being the 'national agricultural team,' relying on reduction of capital and merging to cover losses. Prior efforts for market risk diversification primarily focused on the Chinese market, but with the closing of the Chinese market to Taiwan, the purpose of market diversification no longer exists. A former participant in the corporation's establishment expressed concerns over the company's professionalism, as it heavily relies on government ownership. Tang Shuhua defended the corporation's efforts in market diversification and noted successful initiatives in export, specifically mentioning their pineapple exports totaling around 2,000 metric tons in the first half of the year.
