For the first time, a highly contagious form of ringworm caused by the Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII (TMVII) fungus has been identified in the U.S. The infection, typically spread through sexual contact, was confirmed in a man in New York City who had recently traveled to Europe and California. The fungus is similar to typical ringworm but can be more inflammatory, requiring prompt treatment to prevent scarring and transmission. The doctors recommend evaluating sexual partners and screening for additional sexually transmitted infections when TMVII is suspected or diagnosed.
