Foreign Media Focus on Taiwan's Power Shortage Issue, Legislator Accuses Ministry of Economic Affairs of Painting a Rosy Picture

Reported 7 months ago

During questioning by KMT legislator Zhang Jiachun on June 12, 2024, he warned of Korea deliberately sensationalizing Taiwan's energy issues. Taiwan's power shortage problem has attracted international media attention, with CNBC reporting concerns that it could impact foreign investments. However, while the central government has been downplaying the issue, Zhang urged Minister of Economic Affairs Guo Zhihui and chairman of the National Development Council Liu Jing-Ching to take substantial reform measures and not to disappoint industries and the public. Zhang highlighted the substantial electricity consumption of AI servers compared to traditional servers, the impending closure of the nuclear power plant, and the estimated increase in electricity consumption due to AI development, potentially leading to a 10% electricity shortage next year. He emphasized the need for the government to address these issues pragmatically and not just through rhetoric.
