Former Chief of General Staff Lee Hsi-ming does not support the Chief of General Staff attending a legislative inquiry, citing potential impact on the military's operational command authority. Current Chief of General Staff Mei Jiashu, however, expressed that attending the inquiry could help the public and media better understand and support the national military, from the perspective of benefiting the military and society. The Legislative Yuan's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee invited Defense Minister Gu Liuxiong and the Chief of General Staff to report on the planning of the 'Han Guang Exercise 40' and to be questioned. Mei Jiashu is only the second Chief of General Staff to attend such an inquiry in 26 years.
