International News/Reuters reported on July 2, 2024, that French antitrust authorities are accusing Nvidia, a giant in American AI semiconductor chips, of anti-competitive behavior, making them the first law enforcement agency to take action against Nvidia and highlighting the scrutiny the world's most valuable chip manufacturer is facing from various countries. The French authorities conducted a search of companies in the graphics processing unit (GPU) industry last September, revealing concerns about Nvidia's market behavior. Nvidia has acknowledged investigations by France and other entities, with scrutiny from US, EU, China, and UK officials. The French antitrust agency is worried about the risk of market dominance abuse by chip suppliers like Nvidia, particularly in software like CUDA, and uneasy about Nvidia's recent investment in AI cloud service provider CoreWeave. Both French regulators and Nvidia have not responded to Reuters' requests for comment. Companies violating French antitrust regulations could face fines of up to 10% of their global annual revenue, with the largest fine since 2011 amounting to €12.4 billion imposed on Apple and two distributors.
