Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, has been described as the "experiment generation" for the 401(k) retirement system, with nearly half of them reporting that their retirement savings are behind schedule. This generation was the first to rely primarily on their own individual savings through 401(k)-like plans, leading to challenges in catching up on savings due to credit card debt, loans, and family support. Employers are advised to offer financial planning services and other features to help Gen Xers catch up on their retirement savings. In contrast, millennials and Gen Z are more likely to feel on track with their retirement savings.
