At the EU Summit in Brussels, current EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is nominated for re-election, along with António Costa as European Council President and Kaja Kallas as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. Von der Leyen is credited for leadership during the COVID-19 crisis but faced criticism for vaccine negotiations transparency. Her second term requires approval from the European Parliament with a vote scheduled in July. Costa, known for political astuteness, will succeed Charles Michel as European Council President. Kallas, Estonia's PM, a strong voice against Russia and supporter of Ukraine, receives the nomination for EU's highest diplomatic role. Approval from the European Parliament is also required for Kallas. Von der Leyen became the EU's first female Commission President in 2019, with Costa having faced controversy over a corruption investigation in Portugal but with no criminal charges against him.
