Germany's New Nationality Law: Eight Important Changes in Naturalization

Reported 9 months ago

On June 27, 2024, Germany's new Nationality Law came into effect, simplifying the naturalization process with significant changes. Foreign nationals living in Germany can now apply for German citizenship after legally residing for five years, and exceptional integration performance may reduce this time to three years. The law aims to increase citizenship rates and encourage faster integration, allowing dual citizenship and easier naturalization for 'Gastarbeiter' and 'Vertragsarbeiter' who contributed significantly. Children of one foreign parent residing legally in Germany for over five years can now acquire German citizenship faster, with a commitment to upholding democratic values, German history recognition, and consequences for those spreading hate or misinformation.
