Global News Avoidance at All-Time High of 39% Amid War, Pandemic, Politics, Research Shows

Reported 8 months ago

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford released the '2024 Global Digital News Report,' revealing that nearly four in ten (39%) people worldwide are now avoiding news, citing news as depressing, never-ending, and dull, marking a historical high. The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East are believed to be contributing factors. The report indicates a decline in overall interest in news, with 46% globally expressing little to no interest, down from 63% in 2017. The younger generation prefers getting news from online and social media platforms over traditional sources like television and print media.
